Kano, Nigeria- Wasilat Tasi'u,  a 14-year-old child bride was accused of killing her   35-year-old husband, Umar Sani who died after devouring food that Tasi'u reportedly laced with rat poison.   Tasi'u is currently on trial for the murder of her husband. Last Thursday, Tasi'u's father was trying to appeal to Nigerian Court to spare the life of his daughter from the death sentence.    "We are appealing to the judge to consider Wasilat's plea," her father, Isyaku  Tasi'u, told the Associated Press Thursday.   On Wednesday witnesses told the High Court in Gezawa, a town 60 miles outside Nigeria's second largest city of Kano, that Tasi'u killed her husband two weeks after the wedding in April. Three others allegedly died after eating the poisoned food. "She was married to a man that she didn't love. She protested but her parents forced her to marry him," Zubeida Nagee, a women's rights activist in Kano, told th

Last Wednesday, President Obama took to the podium announcing that the U.S. has now    gained full diplomatic realations with Cuba. This comes after it was announced that Alan Gross, an American contractor will be released as part of a landmark deal with Cuba. Mr. Gross was arrested in 2009 and sentenced to five years in a Cuban prison for trying to deliver satellite telephone equipment capable of cloaking connections to the Internet.   After winning re-election, President Obama made Cuba a priority for his second term. Pope Francis encouraged the talks with letters to President Obama and Mr. Castro and had the Vatican host a meeting in October to finalize a deal. Officer Christopher Manney, the Caucasian police officer who shot and killed Dontre Hamilton, a mentally ill African-American man at Red Arrow Park in Downtown Milwaukee will not be charged. District Attorney John Chisholm said the incident was justified as means of self defense. "This was a tragic incident for the Hamilton family and for the community; Chisholm said. "But based on all the evidence and analysis presented in this report, I come to the conclusion that Officer Manney's use of force in this incident was justified self- defense and that defense cannot be reasonably overcome to establish a basis to charge Officer Manney with a crime."  According to an NBC News report, in addition to an autopsy, a state investigation and an  independent expert's investigation were conducted. On December 16, 2014 terrorists attacked a school in Peshwar, Pakistan leaving 148 people killled. 132 of them being students who attended school at Army Public School. According to the Imam at the Masjid I go for worship, the students were in the middle of taking their final exams for the end of the semester. This is certainly a devastating news for me to hear as a student like the Pakistani kids that were killed. Schools are suppose to be one of the safest places for us and perhaps where we pretty much determine how our future are going to be. These students had a lot to look forward to. They would've been the politicians, doctors and engineers that the country so desperately needs. They were the change and perhaps the next generation of peacemakers. But no, they lost their life to selfish people who thought that these children had nothing to live for or didn't need to be educated. Milwaukee is also known to be one of the most segregated cities in the U.S. Despite all that, we know what we need to work on to better our city. We have various of organizations working on different issues that not only affect our city but also other cities in the U.S. We have organizations that benefit both youth, adults and even a whole family. Currently, the ongoing protests of Michael Brown and Eric Garner is sweeping up the whole country causing riots and absolute horror to some states. Here in Milwaukee we also have our own Ferguson or Eric Garner case with a bit of a twist. Statistics show that almost 1.5 billion people in 91 countries currently live in poverty-  according to UNICEF, 22,000 of them are children who die each day due to poverty. Around 27-28 percent of all children in developing countries are estimated to be underweight or stunted. About 10.6 million children died in 2003 before they reached the age of 5. And around 1.4 million die each year from lack of access to safe drinking water and   adequate sanitation. These aren't just numbers, they are real facts that indicate society is on the edge of corruption. While we all may think that providing food and clean water is the    answer to ending poverty it is certainly not. If what we want is to avert poverty from ever happening, we need to educate families who are experiencing the unimaginable effects of poverty. While Democrats and Republicans are making their final push to win offices across the U.S., they are still debating whether they'll serve the American people or let them down with broken promises and failed bills.
