Image
Kano, Nigeria- Wasilat Tasi'u,  a 14-year-old child bride was accused of killing her   35-year-old husband, Umar Sani who died after devouring food that Tasi'u reportedly laced with rat poison.   Tasi'u is currently on trial for the murder of her husband. Last Thursday, Tasi'u's father was trying to appeal to Nigerian Court to spare the life of his daughter from the death sentence.    "We are appealing to the judge to consider Wasilat's plea," her father, Isyaku  Tasi'u, told the Associated Press Thursday.   On Wednesday witnesses told the High Court in Gezawa, a town 60 miles outside Nigeria's second largest city of Kano, that Tasi'u killed her husband two weeks after the wedding in April. Three others allegedly died after eating the poisoned food. "She was married to a man that she didn't love. She protested but her parents forced her to marry him," Zubeida Nagee, a women's rights activist in Kano, told th

US-Cuba Relation: Was It Justifiable?

Image
Last Wednesday, President Obama took to the podium announcing that the U.S. has now    gained full diplomatic realations with Cuba. This comes after it was announced that Alan Gross, an American contractor will be released as part of a landmark deal with Cuba. Mr. Gross was arrested in 2009 and sentenced to five years in a Cuban prison for trying to deliver satellite telephone equipment capable of cloaking connections to the Internet.   After winning re-election, President Obama made Cuba a priority for his second term. Pope Francis encouraged the talks with letters to President Obama and Mr. Castro and had the Vatican host a meeting in October to finalize a deal. President Obama spoke with Mr. Castro by telephone last Tuesday to seal the agreement in a call that lasted more than 45 minutes, the first direct contact between the leaders of the two countries in more than 50 years.      The United States will ease restrictions on remittances, travel and banking, while Cuban

Dontre Hamilton Decision

Image
Officer Christopher Manney, the Caucasian police officer who shot and killed Dontre Hamilton, a mentally ill African-American man at Red Arrow Park in Downtown Milwaukee will not be charged. District Attorney John Chisholm said the incident was justified as means of self defense. "This was a tragic incident for the Hamilton family and for the community; Chisholm said. "But based on all the evidence and analysis presented in this report, I come to the conclusion that Officer Manney's use of force in this incident was justified self- defense and that defense cannot be reasonably overcome to establish a basis to charge Officer Manney with a crime."  According to an NBC News report, in addition to an autopsy, a state investigation and an  independent expert's investigation were conducted. The investigations were then reviewed by a prosecutor. "I am satisfied that we have done a very thorough, very independent investigation,&qu

Terror in Pakistan

Image
On December 16, 2014 terrorists attacked a school in Peshwar, Pakistan leaving 148 people killled. 132 of them being students who attended school at Army Public School. According to the Imam at the Masjid I go for worship, the students were in the middle of taking their final exams for the end of the semester. This is certainly a devastating news for me to hear as a student like the Pakistani kids that were killed. Schools are suppose to be one of the safest places for us and perhaps where we pretty much determine how our future are going to be. These students had a lot to look forward to. They would've been the politicians, doctors and engineers that the country so desperately needs. They were the change and perhaps the next generation of peacemakers. But no, they lost their life to selfish people who thought that these children had nothing to live for or didn't need to be educated. These terrorists commit these heinious crimes all in the name of Allah. Clearly t

Milwaukee: A City of Change

Image
Though Milwaukee is known for its many names: Cream City, Brew City, Miltown and so forth. Milwaukee is also known to be one of the most segregated cities in the U.S. Despite all that, we know what we need to work on to better our city. We have various of organizations working on different issues that not only affect our city but also other cities in the U.S. We have organizations that benefit both youth, adults and even a whole family. Currently, the ongoing protests of Michael Brown and Eric Garner is sweeping up the whole country causing riots and absolute horror to some states. Here in Milwaukee we also have our own Ferguson or Eric Garner case with a bit of a twist. On April 30, 2014 Dontre Hamilton, a 31 year old African-American was shot 34 times by a Milwaukee Police Officer named Christopher Manney. Since the incident, the Hamilton family held many protests across downtown Milwaukee to express their disappointment to the city's elected officials. With determination,

What Are the Major Factors Of Poverty?

Image
Statistics show that almost 1.5 billion people in 91 countries currently live in poverty-  according to UNICEF, 22,000 of them are children who die each day due to poverty. Around 27-28 percent of all children in developing countries are estimated to be underweight or stunted. About 10.6 million children died in 2003 before they reached the age of 5. And around 1.4 million die each year from lack of access to safe drinking water and   adequate sanitation. These aren't just numbers, they are real facts that indicate society is on the edge of corruption. While we all may think that providing food and clean water is the    answer to ending poverty it is certainly not. If what we want is to avert poverty from ever happening, we need to educate families who are experiencing the unimaginable effects of poverty. Not only do they need to be educated but also the leaders and government that make up those particular countries. Leaders need to know how they can contribute and help to d

Why Islam is a Religion of Peace

Image
You might have noticed all the false things that's being said about the religion of Islam. Here's my favorite video of a brother I admire for his knowledge of the religion and his tremendous talent in spoken word poetry which he uses to explain the true meaning of Islam and its beliefs. Hopefully, this video will shine some light on you and give you some knowledge about Islam. And  please disregard what media might say about the religion. We all know that religion is about peace. No religion teaches people to cause harm towards others. Peace!

Democrats And Republicans: Does It Matter?

Image
While Democrats and Republicans are making their final push to win offices across the U.S., they are still debating whether they'll serve the American people or let them down with broken promises and failed bills. Here in Wisconsin, as Scott Walker and Mary Burke along with many other Republicans and Democrats battle out, the United States map will be changing from red to blue and from blue to red. The most important thing for us U.S. residents is whether we'll actually have a Congress where both parties compromise and work together for the better of our country. As we all know that Washington is currently broken apart. We have the right to vote for candidates who are going to do their job and listen to our voices. Not people who run for office just for the fame and the glory of it. So far this century all I've seen was two parties debating and arguing back and forth blaming each other on the promises made to the American people. The only question I have whether th

Understanding Ebola

Image
According to the World Health Organization,"t he Ebola virus causes an acute, serious illness which is often fatal if untreated. Ebola virus disease (EVD) first appeared in 1976 in 2 simultaneous outbreaks, one in Nzara, Sudan, and the other in Yambuku, Democratic Republic of Congo. The latter occurred in a village near the Ebola River, from which the disease takes its name. The current outbreak in west Africa, (first cases notified in March 2014), is the largest and most complex Ebola outbreak since the Ebola virus was first discovered in 1976. There have been more cases and deaths in this outbreak than all others combined. It has also spread between countries starting in Guinea then spreading across land borders to Sierra Leone and Liberia, by air (1 traveler only) to Nigeria, and by land (1 traveler) to Senegal." I remember watching  a documentary about the Ebola virus when I was in sixth grade, so about three or four years ago. I believe the documentary was called
